The Definition of Plantar Fasciitis

Patients who have plantar fasciitis are often familiar with the severe pain and discomfort this condition may cause. It is defined as an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue that is found on the sole of the foot. Its function is to connect the heel to the toes, and plays a significant role in supporting the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis may occur as a result of gradual wear and tear which may happen from standing on hard surfaces for the majority of the day. Additionally, obesity, flat feet, and ill-fitting shoes may be contributing factors in developing this condition. The symptoms that are generally associated with this ailment can include severe pain in the heel area, and it may be difficult to walk. Mild relief may be found when gentle stretching techniques are frequently performed, which may help to strengthen the foot. If you are suffering from this condition, it is strongly recommended that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you to treat this condition.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Linda D. Nachmani  from Central Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Swollen Feet During Pregnancy

It is common knowledge that pregnant women have swollen feet. This typically occurs in the second trimester, and can be a result of hormonal changes, the growing fetus, and lifestyle habits. Research has indicated mild relief may be found when the feet are elevated as frequently as possible, and eating foods that have limited sodium. Additionally, it is beneficial to wear comfortable shoes, and to practice gentle stretching during the day. Some of these stretches can include rotating the ankles, pointing and flexing the feet, and it may help to refrain from crossing your ankles. If you would like additional information about the impact pregnancy may have on the feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

The Achilles tendon is comprised of two muscles in the calf, and is considered to be the strongest tendon in the body. Injuries to this tendon can be caused by participating in running and jumping activities. Additionally, they can occur as a result of wearing flip flops in the warmer weather, which may cause the Achilles tendon to stretch further than it normally would. Common symptoms that are typically felt with this type of injury may consist of the inability to point and flex the toes, soreness that is felt upon arising in the morning, and difficulty walking. Moderate relief may be found when the proper shoes are worn, and if gentle stretches are implemented into a daily routine. • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

An Additional Toenail Fungus Treatment

The medical condition referred to as onychomycosis is commonly known as toenail fungus. It can cause the nail to become thick and discolored. The traditional treatment of this ailment can consist of using topical creams, despite the fact they may be ineffective. Research has shown there may be another type of remedy for toenail fungus, referred to as laser treatment. This is performed by directing an adequate amount of light energy to the affected site, which can possibly destroy the damaged tissue. If you would like additional information about how laser treatment can be applied to toenail fungus, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist.

Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with Dr. Linda D. Nachmani from Central Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.
